Primary Classes

In the “heart of childhood” years, from 7 until 14, each child develops his life of feelings.

Teachers work as artists to bring into the classroom all the living imagery, colour, poetry and magic they can. Classroom practice too, has a living balance between listening, speaking and doing, between humour and seriousness, impulse and patience, taking in, trans-forming and giving out.

At class 1, the children meet a class teacher with whom they will work in the same class group throughout the primary years.

Specialist teachers are involved in music, French, eurythmy, craft and physical education, but the class teacher takes responsibility for the major part of the class work, including the daily main lesson.

The main lesson takes place first thing in the morning for 1 - 2 hours, while the children are fresh. Such subjects as geography, science, history, mathematics, literature, are presented to engage the whole-hearted participation of the students: physically, cognitively and emotionally, incorporat-ing movement, music, modelling, painting and drawing.

Each main lesson lasts 3-5 weeks, then is left to rest. This alternation provides for maximum variety, concentration and understanding. The breathing space in between - the forgetting - is part of the “digestion” of education.
