History & Future Plans

Sophia Mundi Inner-City Steiner school was founded in 1985 on the initiative of a group of parents seeking a Steiner (or Waldorf) education for their children. In has grown to be a school of 300 students from playgroups for mothers and infants, a kindergarten, and Prep through to Class 12.

The school is currently on the cusp of a new growth period. Because of the growing number of students wanting to enrol in the school we are looking at double streaming to accomodate them rather than turn them away.

We are relocating the primary school to a new site at the Abbotsford Convent, prime real estate overlooking the Yarra River and the Collingwood Childrens Farm. We are part of the Abbotsford Convent Coalition, a community group which is undertaking the creation of an arts, cultural and education precinct on the site of the former Abbotsford Convent on the banks of the Yarra. It is an exciting prospect for our school to be situated in a precinct with artists, galleries, dance studios, theatres and workshops.

For early childhood we have purchased a residential property which is being developed to provide a permanent site for the Kindergarten, Playgroups and Childcare inbetween the Convent and the current school site.

The secondary school will continue to operate and breathe into the spaces made available on the Nicholson Street site.

These are huge steps and big changes, if you have ever thought of giving money to the school, now is the time that it would be most useful.
