At Sophia Mundi we offer an after school care program with activities
that foster the Steiner philosophy. We offer
a balanced program, based on the principles of Steiner education
that is stimulating, interesting and exciting. It allows opportunities
for children to play, explore and develop new skills and is appropriate
to the developmental and leisure needs of all children. Our program
reflects the cultural diversity of today’s society.
Setting and Activities
The service is based within
the school at St Mary's campus at the convent
site and children
are provided with afternoon tea around a large formal table setting
to encourage a ‘family feel’, to tell stories and relate their day.
We do not utilize television or computer games but encourage social
and creative outlets for the children. Indoor activities include
drawing and painting, reading and games. Outdoor activities include
sand play, ball games, and other sport and group activities. There
is provision for the children to rest, complete schoolwork or practice
their music together or individually.
Staff are from a variety of backgrounds including social work
and special needs services. Some have extracurricular interest such
as artistic and circus skills! There is a minimum of 2 staff at
each session where we attempt to balance experience, maturity and
youthful and creative energy.
Aftercare is available between 3 – 6 PM every Mon- Fri (school
holidays & pupil free days, subject to demand) and is primarily
for primary school children aged 5-12 years.
The Centre is run by the Sophia Mundi After Care Committee that
consists of volunteer parents. All parents are most welcome to attend
the monthly committee meetings and to help in other ways.
Enrolment
All children must be enrolled in the after-care program, either
as a permanent or casual users. Enrolment forms are available from
the main school office. A parent Handbook containing policies and
procedures is available from the After Care Coordinator. The After
Care Program is registered with Community Services and users are
entitled to Child Care Benefit rebates through the Family Assistance
Office (Centrelink).
